5 Timeless First Look Ideas! | With Video Clips From the Wedding Day

Updated: Jul 1

Though there's nothing like the first reveal at there ceremony, a first look is an intimate way to surprise the groom and spend a few moments to settle nerves before the big moment.

1. SHOULDER TAP

This is the one I see most often! This one is popular for a good reason. There's something so romantic about the bride walking to the groom while he waits for you. You can tap him on the shoulder, or put your arms around him, or take his hand to tell him he can finally turn around!

You can incorporate reading letters during a first look as well. More on that here: 3 Creative Ways to Share your Handwritten Letters on the Wedding Day

Here is a clip from a wedding film showing part of the first look. You can see the mother of the bride watching from the balcony! In another scene, other and family and friends join her to watch. See more of their first look here: Danny + Jamie

A first look is something you can do with the two of you (plus photographer & videographer:)) or have your bridal party watch and react to!

2. TURN AROUND

This is similar to the first one. Instead of walking up to the groom and tapping on his shoulder, the groom will stay faced away until the bride is ready. Then he turns around for the reveal!

3. BLIND FIRST LOOK

I don't see this one very often, but it's a fun one to do if you're wanting to keep it traditional with the reveal being at the ceremony. You can put a blindfold on the groom if you want, or you can stand on either side of a door, or back to back, and hold hands (a good time to read letters to each other!).

4. FATHER DAUGHTER FIRST LOOK

These moments are once in a lifetime! You could even make this a surprise.

5. BRIDESMAID FIRST LOOK

Your girls have been there from the start!
